The Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre (CIFET) is pleased to
announce the call of participation for its upcoming 27^th edition from 1- 11 September 2020  
CIFET is an annual festival organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt. The festival hosts and presents innovative works of Egyptian, Arab and international troupes, with a focus on performances that aesthetically deviate from mainstream theatre production.
The pandemic and the precautionary measures that followed have posed a challenge to theatrical practice, whether in production or reception. However, the festival will proceed despite these challenges. We believe the show must go on.
The Board of Directors has decided that all festival activities will be held on time and all events of the festival will be online, on the festival website and YouTube channel.
Theatre groups can apply to participate in one of the following two competitions
 
First: Lockdown Theatre Competition
Theatre in front of the camera in the time of the internet
The challenges that prevented theatre practitioners and audiences from meeting in theatre halls are the same challenges that prompted theatre artists all over the world to search for alternative ways to live theatre performances. Therein lies the essence of experimental practice driven by the need and necessity to explore the unknown with creativity, in which the camera aligns with theatre to confront the pandemic.
This competition welcomes the creativity of using the camera and various communication programs, like Zoom application, to serve works made in the time of the pandemic
The directors, according to their vision, collect, prepare and mix separate clips made by the performers – actors, dancers, musicians and creators of the visual – each in his/her own place, due to social distancing, in one video as a theatrical performance
– Duration of the video ranges from 10 minutes to 50 minutes
– The show will be evaluated according to the creative solutions it contains from a theatrical perspective. All cinematic elements such as photography, sound, montage and lighting are auxiliaries to achieving the theatrical vision being evaluated. Therefore, the use of mobile phones for photography is completely welcome.
– Themes of plays may contain – but are not limited to – direct demonstration of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic
– Performances may depend on – but are not limited to – reinterpreting plots of dramatic texts
Second: Recorded Theatre Performances Competition
– This competition is open to videos of performances that were presented before the pandemic in Egyptian, Arab and international theatres                          
The duration of the performance must range from 40 to 90 minutes. Accepted performances over 90 minutes will have to adjust the duration
